Subject: Too much stating in kpathsea 1.6
Message-Id: <9503071922.aa23954@goshawk.maths.Bath.AC.UK>
I apologise now if this is an FAQ or an inappropriate place to ask
this but...
I have built web2c-6.1 with the following kpathsea:
char *kpathsea_version_string = (char *) "kpathsea version 1.6";
Recent local network problems have thrown up the fact latex and
friends stat every single file in the system places for inputs which
does rather slow things down...
It appears that the problem is this: the system default for
TEXINPUTS is /foo/inputs// but there are NO subdirs of /foo/inputs.
In this case, tex stats everything in /foo/inputs.
If one inserts an extra branch on the tree and puts the input files
under /foo/inputs/hack then the problem goes away...
Is this a known bug?
Please e-mail me direct as I do not subscribe to this list.
